Do you see the paper lanterns we made to decorate our Ramadan display within the kids' department? We chose to make these lanterns because the Ramadan Fanous are traditional lanterns with folkloric designs that are a common symbol and decoration used for Ramadan. The crescent moon is another important symbol related to Ramadan, marking the beginning and ending of fasting during this religious observance.

If you would like to make some paper lanterns like these to decorate with at home, you can use the templates below.
Instructions:
1. You simply need some thin cardboard or card stock, painted or otherwise colored however you would like (I used black paper plates we had on hand to craft these).

2. Tape down your template onto the cardboard or card stock so it doesn’t move, and then either cut the template out along with the lanterns windows, or score the cardboard or card stock and then remove the template before cutting.
*An X-Acto knife can be handy for this, but make sure you let an adult help you with it if needed. Scissors could also be used.

3. The final step is to cut out a piece of colored tissue paper to fit over the lantern window, and attach it to the back of the lantern over the window with tape. If there is any tissue paper going past the edge of the lantern, just cut it to fit.

Ramadan Mubarak (Happy Ramadan)!
